300 million copies... Minecraft sales achieve a historic number. What is the reason?
Minecraft encourages children to explore an infinite world and create virtual cities
Sales of the video game, owned by the American company Microsoft, which allows its users to build virtual cities, have exceeded the threshold of 300 million copies, as those responsible for it announced on Sunday, in a result that strengthens its position as the most popular game has achieved sales in the world throughout history.
A post on the game’s website stated, In the final stage, we crossed the threshold of 300 million copies, an achievement that no one dreamed of when we were all building our first mud houses.
By comparison, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold more than 180 million copies worldwide since its release in 2013, according to Take-Two, the parent company of the game’s publisher, Rockstar Games.
The game “Minecraft” was released in 2011, as a result of the efforts of one person, the Swedish Marcus Persson, who participated, along with a few others, in establishing “Mojang Studio,” and through which he sought to complete his project.
Minecraft, which is admired by pirates as well as children, is based on exploring an endless world in which players can collect materials (through mining) and use them to create their virtual cities.
Many consider Minecraft to be a virtual Lego game. And thanks to the open source code, people who play it via PC can create their own items.
In 2014, the game achieved such success that Markus Persson was able to sell Mojang Studio to Microsoft for $2.5 million.
